After School Tutoring: In a program at Cesar Chavez High School, the percentage of English Language Learning students passing the AIMS reading test went from 27% to 42%, an increase of 56%. Yes, high school students can be effective tutors for other high school students. Current Programs: Cesar Chavez High School is continuing the student-to-student tutoring program for English Language Learners. Also, the Phoenix Union High School District is piloting new programs at Central High School and Cesar Chavez High School. The simplicity of the program enables those being tutored to have the training to tutor others in reading and writing. By teaching what students have learned, they will have continuing education opportunities plus leadership and community service opportunities as they will make a difference for others by tutoring.
